Cabaret Night at The John Barleycorn reviewed by Sandra Morgan August 2012
The menu offered a good selection. For starters, Frank chose the Pan fried Mediterranean Prawns in Garlic Butter with Greek Salad which arrived looking and smelling delicious. There were two large butterflied prawns, full of flavour with a crisp and colourful Greek salad. I had the Tandoori Chicken Skewers with Pitta and a Mint and Cucumber Dip – three large skewers of succulent, nicely spiced, tender chicken, with salad garnish. The main course was equally excellent. Frank’s Braised Pork Belly was cooked to perfection with crispy crackling and served with garlic roast potatoes, a selection of fresh buttered vegetables and a Pork Jus. I chose the 10oz Scottish Rump Steak with Peppercorn Sauce, cooked to my liking, with crispy golden hand cut chips and a lovely mixed salad. The steak was absolutely ‘melt in the mouth ’. There was a fantastic selection of desserts although after the feast we had just had, we only had a little room left. Frank chose the delicious English Toffee Ice Cream and I had the Cheese Board which was well presented with a good selection of cheeses, grapes, celery and plenty of biscuits. There was wide range of popular brand lagers and real ales and a varied wine list, which had useful tasting notes to help us make our choice of a Pinot Grigio Rosé .The list included some excellent house wines as well as a selection of wines from around the world at reasonable prices. Stacy Stuart came on at about 9pm and opened with a great rendition of Sail On by the Commodores, he had an excellent and versatile voice and a good rapport with the diners. Lots of people were up and dancing by his second song. Throughout the evening he sang a mix of Michael Bublé, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Barry White, Bob Marley and many more plus he asked for any requests. He certainly kept the dancing and the fun atmosphere going throughout. All in all, it was a great night, excellent food, service and entertainment. The John Barleycorn regularly holds Cabaret Nights plus numerous Christmas Party Nights in December with a variety of live vocalists, so we will certainly be going back for another thoroughly enjoyable evening. An extensive menu (not over priced). Pleasantly attentive staff and the "lady of the house" took the time to seek our views on how enjoyable or otherwise are visit had been, well the food we had was excellent. We most certainly will return and recommend the John Barleycorn to those who wish for first class service, food, and a lovely location.*************************** Jenny Wilson Sunday 27 May 2012 What a wonderful afternoon! We couldn't of wished for better food and surroundings. Having started off with a selection of home made bread which were just gorgeous, my partner and I tucked into a fabulous chicken roast and a steak from the specials menu. Extra roasties and parsnips were brought out alongside some fantastic veg for the steak (which was cooked beautifully). Our waiter was brilliant, quick and did a great job. We will be back! *************************** Tracey Durkin
Rob Slater A glorious summers lunchtime in glorious surroundings. Helpful friendly staff, a wonderful menu and specials board.
